DOLLS ‘N’ DIVAS

I created Dolls ‘n’ Divas after being inspired on a photo shoot for a model’s portfolio. She was in an evening dress and we improvised with her posing on a Marshall amplifier that was lying around the location. In my head I saw her as one of the classic 50’s pin up girls and decided to edit the picture in the style of a weathered playing card. This sparked off so much creativity and excitement in me that I decided to look at furthering the idea. It was a refreshing change for me as I was mainly shooting men in rock/metal bands at the time. The girl inside me loved the idea of playing dress up, styling and bringing my love of the Vintage into my work.

A couple of months of thinking, researching and creating I started a project making a full pack of playing cards. 4 models, 4 suits. Lots of fun props. Keeping the idea quite simple as not to detract from the purpose of the actual playing card itself. I involved my love of tattoos along with the classiness of the 50’s pin ups to bring it to the modern – a reflection of my personality in a way – Retro meets Rocker.

Dolls ‘n’ Divas was born!

The playing cards turned into a home range of coasters, notepads, postcards and compact mirrors. Through self promotion and a 2 page spread in alternative magazine – Devolution – products shipped to USA, Japan and the UK. I was stoked and the feedback was great, suggesting I make a Calendar.

With the contacts I made along the way in the Music Industry, backstage at shows and on photo shoots I thought to gather the ladies together for some fun (women are quite outnumbered in the Alternative/Rock Music genre). I also contacted clothing companies and researched locations; it was more adventurous and challenging for me than the previous project to organise and make everything work.

The 2011 Dolls ‘n’ Divas Calendar launched at The London Tattoo Convention in September 2010 alongside that an interview by Dominion pull-out in Terrorizer Magazine. Calendars shipped Worldwide (USA, Australia, Switzerland, UK, France, Belguim, Denmark, Netherlands… the list goes on…)

There are more plans in the pipeline; would you come along with me for the fun?!
